It is no secret that preventative maintenance is an essential part of sustaining a healthy fleet. Comprehensive checks aid in achieving the best possible long-term ROI. One key component, however, tends to get overlooked. Tyre care, namely, tyre replacement, should be monitored vigilantly to reinforce road safety, prevent unnecessary costs and ultimately make your fleet safer.

Safety is always the primary concern. Tyres that are not properly maintained are a hazard to your drivers, vehicles, and everyone else on the road. With human error mechanical and tyre issues serving as notable contributors to accidents, the responsibility falls on your team to ensure all aspects of the vehicle are safe and legal before anyone sits behind the wheel.

Timing of Replacement

Generally, front tyres are ready for replacement once they’ve travelled around 20,000 miles. The rule of thumb for rear tyres is approximately 30,000 miles. Of course, it is essential to note that variable factors such as driving habits, tyre type, drivetrain, etc., significantly influence their lifespan.

Best Practices

Because of the numerous variables that affect the condition of a tyre, they must be monitored daily. Therefore a formal management process should be instituted, accounting for factors such as tread depth, tyre pressure and sidewall condition.

In the UK, the minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm. Failure to meet or exceed this value can result in a fine of £2,500 in addition to other penalties. Most manufacturers recommend replacement once the tread wears down to 3mm, especially during seasons with harsh weather conditions; however, in our experience, 2mm is optimal.

Furthermore, you should check the air pressure on each tyre during daily assessments to ensure that it inflates according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Thorough inspection for punctures, cracks and abrasions should also take place.

Having a proactive tyre management programme will not only improve the safety of your fleet but reduce unplanned events and therefore increase your vehicle’s availability and return on investment.

From roof to rubber, having a proactive approach to managing your vehicles will pay dividends.
