London EV Show – Panel Discussion with Holman

The future of transportation is electric, and electric vans are no exception. In November at the London EV Show, Derek Lynch, Manager of Vehicle Supply Chain at Holman, joined industry experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges in electric fleets.

Market Drivers

Paul Kirby, Commercial Director of The EV Cafe, led the discussion by outlining the pressing need for change in the UK’s van market. He highlighted the stark reality: while vans constitute only 12% of all vehicles on the road (roughly 4.8 million), they contribute a disproportionate 18% of total emissions, rising to a staggering 32% in urban areas. These harmful emissions significantly impact our health and environment, acting as a powerful driver for the transition to electric vans, amongst other motives:

  • Air Quality Concerns: Electric vans eliminate tailpipe emissions, significantly improving air quality, especially in densely populated areas.
  • Government ZEV Mandate: The ZEV Mandate sets ambitious targets for manufacturers to sell more electric vehicles, pushing the industry towards a greener future.
  • Corporate Sustainability Goals: Environmental responsibility is at the forefront of many businesses, making electric vans a strategic choice that aligns with their sustainability objectives.

The economic benefits that stem from lower operating costs through reduced fuel consumption and lower maintenance, as well as an improved driving experience, with quieter, smoother rides enhancing drivers’ well-being and productivity also make the switch to electric an attractive option.

With over 30 electric van models available and technology rapidly evolving, there’s no better time to make the switch. And remember, you don’t have to go all-in at once. As Paul emphasises, start by identifying vehicles in your fleet that are well-suited for electrification and gradually transition.

However, locating the suitable vehicles and navigating the electric transition can be complex. That’s where industry experts like Holman can help. We can offer guidance, helping you overcome challenges and realise the full potential of electric fleets.

Holman: Shaping the Electric Fleet Future

As a global automotive leader, Holman plays a crucial role in the electric transition. Derek Lynch, Manager of Vehicle Supply Chain at Holman, shares some ways in which we can help with the switch to an electric fleet:

  • Flexible Funding: Rigid contracts are a barrier. Consumers do not want to switch to electric to then find out it doesn’t suit them and then be stuck. Holman offers agile solutions that allow you to stay flexible and exit vehicles when they need to mitigate risk.
  • Real-world data: Proven customer case studies demonstrate the viability of electric fleets – helping to debunk myths.
  • Manufacturer Collaboration: Ensuring proper pricing strategies and residual values across the supply chain requires collaboration. Holman is committed to working with manufacturers for a smooth transition and to ensure fair pricing.

Insights from the Panel of Industry Experts

  • Keith Shorter, Europcar Mobility Group: Highlighted the importance of flexible solutions to “try before you buy”, as well as educating consumers that the future of electric is now.
  • Rob Anderson, Mitie: Collaboration across the industry is vital to address charging challenges, particularly for home-based drivers.
  • David Petts, Ford of Europe: Dispelling myths is key. Many van drivers are unaware of grant opportunities and which vehicles the ZEV mandate applies to, highlighting the need for clear communication.

Conclusion

We all play a part in the future of electric. While manufacturers have their targets under the ZEV Mandate, ultimately, the cost burden lands on consumers if those targets are missed. Collaboration, knowledge sharing, and expert guidance are key, and Holman is here to help you navigate this exciting transition.
