electric vehicles (EVs), including depot chargepoint grants and a \u00a32.5bn investment package under the DRIVE35 programme, there\u2019s a lot to digest.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve broken down the key updates, with insights from our EV Product Lead, Ross Palman, to help fleets understand what this means in practice.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 Depot Charging Grant<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0newly announced depot charging grant\u00a0appears to offer an additional\u00a0\u00a315,000 per depot, on top of the existing\u00a0\u00a3350 per socket (capped at \u00a314,000 for 40 sockets). This shift toward a\u00a0site-based funding model\u00a0is encouraging as it recognises the complexity of depot infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the headline figure sounds generous, in practice, it may still fall short of covering the true costs of large-scale electrification (especially for operators with multiple sites or extensive grid upgrade requirements).<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 Support for EV Procurement<\/h2>\n<p>The Government has earmarked\u00a0up to \u00a3700m\u00a0to support EV procurement. This could help maintain momentum at a time when EV sales already sit at 21.8%, close to the 2025 target of 22%.<\/p>\n<p>Still, we believe more targeted support is needed for the\u00a0used EV market, where residual value (RV) concerns, rising insurance costs, and inconsistent supply remain a barrier to TCO optimisation for fleets.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 \u00a325m for Cross-Pavement Charging<\/h2>\n<p>With around\u00a040% of UK drivers without access to off-street parking, the\u00a0\u00a325m cross-pavement charging initiative\u00a0is essential for equitable EV uptake. But the current system where each of the\u00a0382 local councils\u00a0must approve specific products (eg. Kerbo Charge, Gul-e, Charge Gully, etc.), creates a fragmented and slow rollout. The funding is a good start, but streamlining approvals will be key to real impact.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 DRIVE35 Programme<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00a32.5 billion DRIVE35 programme\u00a0is a 10-year commitment to support UK automotive innovation, manufacturing, and supply chains. It aims to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size:14px;\">\n<li>Support ZEV and battery production<\/li>\n<li>Fund R&amp;D and innovation<\/li>\n<li>Create and safeguard jobs<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen the UK\u2019s global EV leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a bold commitment! But as we\u2019ve seen with the\u00a0LEVI fund, big numbers don\u2019t always translate into fast or consistent delivery. We\u2019ll be watching closely to see how this funding is deployed, and how quickly.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 What\u2019s Still Missing?<\/h2>\n<p>While this announcement is a massive step in the right direction, we\u2019d still like to see:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size:14px;\">\n<li>Support for large vans\u00a0(e.g., MOT exemptions, tacho rules)<\/li>\n<li>Public charging VAT reduction<\/li>\n<li>Incentives for the second-hand EV market<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The Government\u2019s latest EV funding announcements are a welcome boost for the industry, especially for fleets navigating their transition to zero-emission vehicles.
